[EV Writing ep.8] The Perfect Trip: Kawasan’s Calling
Canyoneering has always been one of my dreams. When I was young, there was a similar activity in Taiwan at Tracking River. However, it was located in Hualien, eastern Taiwan, and required a three-hour hike just to reach it. Because of this, I never had the chance to experience canyoneering.
I first heard about Kawasan during my first week at EV Academy. A Korean girl shared her trip and highly recommended it to me. Unfortunately, EV Academy’s tour options did not include it. If someone had organized the trip, I would have joined, but three weeks passed without any opportunity. I started to worry that I would regret not experiencing Kawasan while in Cebu. That’s why I decided to arrange my own adventure.
To reach the entrance, we took a “Zipline”, which saved us 40 minutes of hiking. To be honest, I was really scared — my heart rate shot up to 140 beats per minute. I was extremely nervous, but I overcame my fear, and after a 45-minute journey, I finally arrived at the entrance.
I then started experiencing all kinds of water activities: river trekking, cave exploration, body floating, and cliff jumping. It was a major milestone in overcoming my fears. I jumped from different heights — 1.5m, 3m, 5m, and finally, 10m. For the 10m jump, I hesitated twice, but in the end, I conquered my fear and took the leap.
One of the most peaceful and memorable moments was simply floating on the river, surrounded by breathtaking views — caves, trees, and the sky blending harmoniously. That moment will stay with me forever.
Compared to ocean activities, canyoneering is more appealing to me. The reason is that river tracking feels like painting a masterpiece with every step. The green plants, deep canyons, and blue waters blend together, constantly changing and evolving. Unlike the ocean, where the scenery shifts with the weather, canyoneering allows you to shape the experience with your own movements.
No doubt, I have no regrets about my time in Cebu. I chose what I loved and embraced it fully. Finally, I fulfilled Kawasan’s calling and checked another item off my bucket list.
