[EV Writing ep.9] The Elaborated Practice Hinders Effective English Learning
Have you ever felt confused when trying to memorize vocabulary? These words come from IELTS speaking topics and presentation exams.
For example, the word “liquorous”, which is supposed to mean “very talkative” — I had never heard it before. Even after finishing the exam, reviewing, and explaining it again, it still doesn’t stick in my brain.
A sense of resistance has existed for many years.
The problem is, I think this word is too advanced and has little chance of being used in the future, which makes me feel like I’m missing a growth opportunity.
If you decide to keep improving, the key is to open your mind, embrace challenges, and endure the struggle. However, I failed to endure it after the vocabulary exam. I asked my teacher, “When do we use these advanced words?”
The teacher Amazing replied, “Anytime and anywhere. Adopting them can elevate your English proficiency.” Hearing this from such an inspiring teacher, I decided to shift my mindset from a fixed to an open one.
Growth Mindset
Accepting the possibilities of learning, studying, and taking notes is essential. Only with this mindset can you get closer to speaking like a native speaker. In second-language learning, results won’t come instantly, but persistence will make a difference.
